Historical chamber arrangements are the ADCH of Mozart and Haydn’s time. Often made with the imprimatur of the composers themselves, chamber arrangements were a very important way for their work to become known, as well as the smart way to bring the latest music into one’s own home.
The Australian Haydn Ensemble is well known for discovering and performing such historical chamber versions on period instruments, bringing audiences as close as possible to the original sound worlds of Mozart and Haydn.
In this concert you will hear a wonderful example of such a work in Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 ‘London’ arr. Salomon, as well as a brilliant flute quartet, also written with the private sphere in mind.
Mozart’s Flute Quartet in D major is one of three quartets he composed as a commission for an amateur flautist and ‘gentleman of means’. Mozart’s stunning writing for the flute, particularly in the slow movement, showcases the wonderfully soft-edged colour of the classical period flute made from boxwood. Mozart finishes the work with a dazzlingly, virtuosic and playful Rondo to set your heart racing.
Salomon was a talented musician and even more talented impresario who convinced Haydn to travel to London on what would turn out to be a hugely successful foray and one of the most productive, happy and abundant periods of Haydn’s long life. The London is the last of a series of 12 symphonies written in that city and it is Haydn at his very best – inventive, exuberant, witty and poignant – all within the standard Classical structure of the time.
Thanks to the work of the ADCH you too can experience this music in your own chamber – because everything old really is new again.
