Allegri Ensemble presents Faire is the Heaven at the historic Scots Memorial Church in Bathurst Street, Hobart.
This hour-long program celebrates the rich tradition of the English choral anthem with a series of highlights drawn from the 16th century through to the present day. The concert begins in the Tudor era, with choral favourites including Thomas Tallis’s If Ye Love Me, William Byrd’s Sing Joyfully, and the deeply moving anthem When David Heard that Absalom Was Slain by Thomas Tomkins. The renaissance of unaccompanied English church music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is represented by Stanford’s beloved Three Latin Motets from 1905; these pave the way for later gems such as Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (Bairstow) and Harris’s sublime Faire is the Heaven, from which the name of the concert is taken.
This concert is Allegri Ensemble’s first under its new director, Dr Jonathan Wallis, who will speak briefly about the music during the performance.
