“… The Australia Ensemble always fills me with high expectations of consummate musical performance” Danial Kaan, ClassikON 2016

Sophistication is the hallmark of all French musical cuisine, encompassing a vivid spectrum of intellect, curiosity, wit, and sensuality. Pierre Boulez’s modernist approach in Dérive is both crystalline and uncompromising, where effervescent textures are created by the transformation of a single pure chord. In stark contrast is Debussy’s Sonata for flute, viola and clarinet, with the composer’s sensuous tone and lavish impressionistic style embodying the quintessential ‘French’ archetype for which he is so celebrated. Similarly, the brazen wit and sharp timing of Françaix’ Clarinet Quintet encapsulates another aspect of French nature altogether; one which is both playful and erudite. A tempestuous offering of Fauré’s Piano Quartet concludes the program with the integration of Germanic influences and modal harmonies, adding to the rich flavour of the French musical palate.
