“… The Australia Ensemble always fills me with high expectations of consummate musical performance” Danial Kaan, ClassikON 2016

“For years Franz Schubert, not possessing a piano, did most of his composing on the guitar which hung over his bed and on which he would play before rising” – A.P. Sharpe. The relationship between Schubert and the guitar may appear tenuous at best, however it forms the basis of a beautiful program, one which draws together music from the nineteenth century with sparkling Australian chamber works for guitar. The Ensemble welcomes guest artist Karin Schaupp to perform quintets written specifically for her by Australian composers, Robert Davidson and Paul Stanhope. The latter’s Shards, Chorales and Dances was written and recorded some 15 years ago, but never received its premiere performance. The concert is bookended by Schumann’s idiomatically charming Fantasiestücke, and Schubert’s more grandiose E flat Piano Trio.
