Béla Bartók’s Contrasts presents difference in many ways; in tempo, instrumentation and harmonic structures. The work feature’s Bartók’s inimitable style, but also suggestions of the jazz background of the man it who commissioned it, Benny Goodman. Ross Edwards’ Maninya pieces are built of small rhythmic cells, woven together to reflect the timelessness of the natural world. The Piano Trio Op.70 no.2 is a shining example of Ludwig van Beethoven’s mastery of harnessing contrasting ideas and developing them within an inspired musical architecture. Louise Farrenc was obliged to wait until the end of her career for the Paris Conservatoire to recognise her originality as a musician. An example of the tenacity required of female composers, she first guided many students to successful careers with her skills in piano, harmony and composition.
