Australian Chamber Choir with Amy Johansen | Terra Australis – Land of the Imagination

25 August 2019 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm AEST

The Australian Chamber Choir, directed by Douglas Lawrence, presents Terra Australis – Land of the Imagination. This concert is presented with Amy Johansen – organ , as part of the Sydney University Organ Recital Series.

Great music for choir is matched by year with voyages in search of Terra Australis, the fabled Great Southern Land. The program includes music by the first published black composer, Vicente Lusitano (?-1561). This astounding piece of chromatic polyphony is contemporary with Oronce Finé’s Atlas of 1531, in which Terra Australis is depicted.

Matthew Flinders died the day after his book, A Voyage to Terra Australis, was published in 1814, the same year as Beethoven’s Farewell Song. Don’t miss this new experience in listening.

Also in the program is music by Josquin, Merulo, Sweelinck, Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Messiaen, Henry, Holley.
