Australian Wind Symphony | Celebrate!

29 July 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST

$15 – $54

Welcome to the second program of the four-event 2021 Concert Series, where the stunning Australian Wind Symphony joins with its guests to celebrate the ability to share live music in a showcase evening of musical diversity, as it delivers a program demonstrating the full brilliance the wind orchestra experience brings to our lives.

Bruce Broughton’s aptly titled ‘A Celebration Overture’ ignites the evening as the orchestra returns to its new stage of The Bicentennial Hall, fresh from its $1.5 million makeover. Eric Whitacre’s lush nod to the English romantic composers — ‘October’ — follows before we put a spring into winter with the celebrated Alex Lithgow work ‘Invercargill’, enjoying its 120th anniversary in 2021. Of that era, we’ll stroll down The Strand with Handel thanks to Percy Grainger before premiering (that’ll be #61 premieres from this leading ensemble) with Rob Smith’s high-energy ‘Push’.

Following interval, Richard Saucedo’s ‘Shooting Stars’ lights up the night sky as we set ourselves for a fun-filled trip down memory lane with George Gershwin’s ‘An American in Paris’, and you won’t even need a vaccination certificate to get there! One of those ‘English romantics’ Eric Whitacre was referring to features next with the timeless beauty of Edward Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’, before we conclude our travels with a contemporary British masterpiece in Philip Sparke’s extraordinary ‘Celebration’.
