Bel a capella: To the Hands
8 April @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm AEST
Tickets bought online: $40/$30/$20 | Tickets bought at the door: $45/$35/$20
This superb programme performed by one of Sydney’s finest choral chamber ensembles includes the final movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2 for solo violin in D minor with added choral interpolations from various chorales as well as a new arrangement for string quintet and organ of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. By using a small number of singers, similar to the twenty or so in Fauré’s choir at the Madeleine, added to the chamber music quality of the strings, unique colours and textures are created which breathe new life into an otherwise familiar but continually evolving work.
The ensemble will also be giving the Australian Premiere of To the Hands by the Pulitzer prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, which begins and ends with strains of Buxtehude’s own Ad manus from his Membra Jesu Nostra, with small harmonic and melodic references woven occasionally throughout.
- Dieterich Buxtehude: Ad manus (from Membra Jesu Nostri, BuxWV 75)
- Caroline Shaw: To the Hands (Australian Premiere)
- JS Bach: Ciaconna (with choral interpolations)
- Gabriel Fauré: Requiem
- Soloist: Bridget O’Donnell (violin)
- Conductor: Anthony Pasquill
