Bel a cappella | Friede auf Erden
12 November @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm AEDT
Join Bel a cappella and Musical Director Anthony Pasquill for their final concert for 2017, Friede auf Erden (Peace on Earth). The programme draws together works from Thomas Tallis, Bernat Vivancos, Arvo Pärt, Arnold Schönberg and features an Australian Premiere from contemporary composer and world-renowned pianist Stephen Hough.
Friede auf Erden will be performed on Sunday 5th November at 3:00pm in Paddington Uniting Church and on Sunday 12th November at 3:00pm in St Peter’s Church, Cremorne.
Stephen Hough, a British-born pianist, composer and writer, is also an Australian citizen. In his collection, entitled ‘December’, Hough brings together four pieces that reflect the events of the month, from the preparation for Christmas of ‘Advent Calendar’ to the ‘Gate’ of the New Year. This performance will be an Australian Premiere of these works.
Also being performed is the magnificently splendid Videte miraculum by Thomas Tallis, a masterpiece with a rich palette of colours, enhanced by suave melodic writing with a slow-moving harmonic pulse tinged with heart-achingly gorgeous cadences.
Arvo Pärt’s early choral works — those in the so-called tintinnabular style — were composed almost exclusively to Latin texts. However, after his relocation to Germany the composer began to embrace the German language in his music, as evidenced by his Seven Magnificat Antiphons (composed in 1988, revised in 1991). The texts that make up this work would normally occur, individually, as antiphons to the Magnificat at Vespers on the seven evenings preceding Christmas Eve. Pärt, however, turned them into a single work in seven sections. The program closes with a rare performance of Arnold Schönberg’s glorious early masterpiece Friede auf Erden, a call for harmony and brotherhood in a fractured world.
