Ben Waters Boogie Woogie Band feat. Derek Nash (UK)
6 February @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm AEDT$34
Boogie Woogie Piano and Sax from award winning UK Musicians Ben Waters and Derek Nash
Join us for a very special evening as two of the UK’s foremost musicians take us on an epic musical journey from the early blues through an eclectic mix of ragtime, jazz, boogie woogie, stride and R&B to the Rock ‘n Roll of the 50’s & 60’s.
Described by the London Times as “like a bouncing castle for grown-ups”, the “flair & bravado” of Ben Waters’ piano playing comes together with the energetic, vibrant & passionate saxophone of Derek Nash for a tour through the development of American music.
Ben Waters, the UK’s King of Boogie Woogie, grew up as an ardent admirer of the great Antoine “Fats” Domino. So it came as no surprise that when making its documentary series Music Legends we Lost in 2017, Sky TV called on Ben for the episode on “Fats”. The episode goes to air on UK Sky TV in December.
One of the greatest musical influences on the young Ben Waters was family friend Ian Stewart, a founding member of the Rolling Stones. Ian died young from a heart attack, leaving Ben with a lasting desire to acknowledge his friend in some way. That wish came to fruition with “Boogie 4 Stu“, Ben’s most successful album to-date that features all Rolling Stones past & present, his great friend Jools Holland and many more of Stu’s mates.

Ben’s remarkable career has seen him playing/recording with legendary figures including The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Shakin’ Stevens, Jools Holland, Ray Davies, Leo Sayer, PJ Harvey and others. Ben was voted Europe’s #1 Boogie Woogie piano player in 2016.
Here he’ll be joined by special guest Derek Nash, a member of the Jools Holland Orchestra since 2004. At the forefront of the British Jazz movement, Derek Nash is “one of the most versatile saxophonists in the UK today” (The Guardian).
Derek has led Sax Appeal for over 30 years, fronts the funk/fusion band Protect the Beat, and is a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion.
He is renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones – from sonorous baritone to soaring soprano – and is an award-winning performer having received many prestigious accolades, including the John Dankworth Award and the British Jazz Award (Small Group), Best Jazz CD of the Year for ‘Young Lions, Old Tigers’ with the late Spike Robinson and Jazz Musician of the Year (Global Music Foundation).
A Boogie Woogie favourite, Ben has toured all over the world and on this night, joined by accomplished saxophonist Derek Nash, you can expect a vivid program featuring music by such pioneers as Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Meade Lux Lewis, Robert Johnson, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Dave Brubeck, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry.
Come experience an evening of ‘Boogie Woogie’ like you’ve never heard before, they will blow you away
“I have been a boogie fan since the 1950s and seen pianists all over the world. None come close to Waters.” – Blueprint Magazine.
