Elder Hall Lunchtime Concert | Mercurial Spirit

27 August 2021 @ 1:10 pm - 2:00 pm AEST

A short, transparent work, almost Haydenesque in character, Shostakovich’s Ninth sits lightly between such giants as his tragic Eighth and Tenth Symphonies. Schumann’s cello concerto has recently become a staple piece of the romantic cello repertoire after a century of obscurity. It’s a work that combines the composer’s most unique and personal qualities – intense lyricism, rhythmic vigour and a fair amount of ambiguity.
