2018 Sunday Series: A Prelude in Tea

Join us on the last Sunday of the month for a scrumptious afternoon tea and concert from some of Australia’s best and most exciting
small ensembles.

In 2018 Ensemble Vinifera celebrate their fifth anniversary and their fifth year performing at the Independent Theatre by focusing on the Quintet.

Mozart’s final Flute Quartet, K298 in A, takes a cheeky dig at his contemporaries and, like Saint-Saëns Carnival of The Animals, was never intended for public performance.

It is followed by a pair of similarly succinct song cycles. Poulenc’s Le Bestiaire, featuring three creatures of the land and three of the sea, is partnered by Terence Greaves’ playful twisting of the English song in praise of flowers and gardens with “A Garden of Weeds”.

To round the afternoon off, the eternally popular Piano Quintet by Schubert, nicknamed “The Trout” for the set of variations on his own song “Die Forelle”.

PROGRAM:

  • Mozart, Flute Quartet No.4 in A, K.298
  • Poulenc, Le Bestiare
  • Greaves, A Garden of Weeds
  • Schubert, Piano Quintet in A, D.667 “The Trout”

  • Piano – Alan Hicks
  • Flute – Lisa Osmialowski

Ensemble Vinifera was created in 2013 by several top Sydney freelance musicians who played together in what is now the Opera Australia Orchestra.

The group was created to be inherently flexible allowing exploration of a broad variety of music from various genres, eras and nationalities, all performed to the highest standards.

Featuring a core of Clarinet, Viola and Cello, Vinifera features regular guest artists on Flute, Harp, Violin, Bass and Piano and enjoys presenting a mixture of familiar composers and works along with more obscure offerings.

The members have studied and performed professionally around the globe across the spectrum of chamber, symphonic and operatic music as well as fields as diverse as theatre, film, television and pop.

Afternoon tea served from 2:30pm.
Concert commences at 3:30pm.
