‘Why are there so few female composers?’ is a question that resurfaces regularly. There are in fact many first rate female composers and this concert will feature works from several, spanning from the early 19th century through until today. The feature work is Ensemble Vinifera’s first commissioned work from Sydney composer Jessica Wells; “The Female Of The Species” takes it’s name from Rudyard Kipling’s eponymous poem of 1911. Vinifera will also be performing works by Pulitzer Prize winner, Jennifer Higdon, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (brother of Felix and considered a child prodigy of similar stature) and perhaps Australia’s highest profile composer of this time, Elena Kats-Chernin.
- Rebecca Clarke, Morpheus
- Jennifer Higdon, Dash
- Elena Kats-Chernin, Eliza’s Aria from Wild Swans
- Fanny Mendelssohn, Piano Trio Op.11 in d minor
- Jessica Wells, “The Female Of The Species” (New Commission)
- plus other works
Ensemble Vinifera was formed in 2013 by several Sydney musicians who have regularly performed together in the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. We created this new chamber ensemble to be inherently flexible, allowing us to play music from a wide variety of eras, genres and national backgrounds across a broad palette of instrumental combinations whilst performing this music to the highest standards.Based around a core group of Viola, Cello and Clarinet, Ensemble Vinifera metamorphoses as required to perform anything from solo Bach to octets for mixed winds and strings. We particularly enjoy bringing less frequently seen groupings, composers and works to our audiences. The founding members have studied and performed throughout Australia, the UK, Europe and North America covering the broad spectrum of chamber, symphonic and operatic repertoire. They have between them worked in every facet of the music industry from period ensembles to soundtracks, live theatre, rock tours and albums for ABC Classics to rock and country artists. As well as a love for great music, we share a love for good food and wine in the company of good friends, hence our choice of name.
This is Prelude in Tea concert presented by the Independent Theatre. Scrumptious afternoon tea served from 2:30pm, stellar chamber music concert at 3:30pm. It’s the perfect Sunday afternoon out.
