Ensemble Vinifera: Screen Sounds
30 September 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm AESTFree – $30
Ensemble Vinifera perform a program of music by composers associated with the Silver Screen. The essence of great film music is to educe an emotional response from the audience and our featured composers were masters of this craft.
Bernard Herrmann’s “Echoes” for String Quartet is very reminiscent of his music for several of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest movies and utilises a theme from his score for “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. Then we change pace to the sweet and rather buoyant Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Viola, Cello and Harp by Nino Rota, composer of over 170 film scores for Directors including Fellini, Visconti, Zeffirelli and Coppola.
Leonard Bernstein also composed for Hitchcock as well as his musicals and Oscar nominated score for “On the Waterfront”. His “Variations on an Octatonic Scale” is an intimate and slightly more exploratory work composed for friends. The concert closes with Ravel’s fantastic Duo Sonata for Violin and Cello, featured in the film “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” and performed by husband and wife, Katherine Lukey and Paul Ghica. Other guest performers are James Fortune, Nicola Bell and Rachel Dyker.
