Ensemble Vinifera returns with a feast from the German romantic tradition for their final outing for 2017. This program is a distillation of symphonic grandeur.
In “Till Eulenspiegel Einmal Anders” (Till Eulenspiegel another way) Franz Hasenöhrl reduces Richard Strauss’ shortest tone poem from fifteen minutes to ten and from roughly one hundred musicians to five. Some might regard such diminution a travesty and Hasenöhrl, perhaps jokingly, perhaps in self defence, subtitled this musical joke of sorts as a Grotesque musicale.
Bookending this comic outing are two works by the composers who are perhaps most associated with propelling German music from the Classical period into the Romantic; Beethoven’s String Trio Op.9 No.3 and Schubert’s Octet D803, both of which were seemingly regarded by the composers as training before composing their first symphonies.
The Trio is full of the brooding intensity for which Beethoven’s later symphonies are renowned and the Octet, a much earlier work than it’s posthumous publication suggests, was modelled very closely on Beethoven’s unusually light and cheerful Septet Op.20 which was still spectacularly popular in Vienna in the 1820’s.
- Beethoven – String Trio in c minor, Op.9 no.3
- Strauss arr. Hasenöhrl – Til Eulenspiegel Einmal Anders!
- Schubert – Octet in F major, D803
