Emerging composer, John Rotar, brought the house down with his piece, V Večernih as part of FQ’s 2016 composer development workshop. Launching the year’s focus on Mendelssohn, FQ has commissioned John to arrange some of Mendelssohn’s songs for string quartet. Included will be Frage, upon which Mendelssohn based his Op. 13 quartet (being performed in Program Three). Immensely talented with a vivacity and clarity in his writing, John Rotar is soon to become a well-known name.
Beethoven’s string quartets are more than a cornerstone of the string quartet canon, and their importance in the musical landscape cannot be understated. His final string quartet, Op. 135 which bears the inscription “Muss es Sein?” acts as an apt bookend to Mozart’s crystalline K.464.
