Gerard Willems | In Recital
31 March 2021 @ 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEDT
This concert is live streamed on Melbourne Digital Concert Hall
Gerard Willems has chosen a program of two pieces that are close in composition date, but wildly different in style and emotion. Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op. 15 is an early work of this composer who struggled in life with adult confidence and mental stability, yet was able to weave the innocent joy and playfulness of a child’s everyday life in this wonderful collection of miniatures. Beethoven, on the other hand, exudes that very confidence that Schumann misses and is not afraid to run full speed towards a cliff. He dedicated his Sonata No 21, Op. 53 to Count von Waldstein – a long-term friend and supporter who was at the time faced with an uncertain future. It almost feels as if this could have been Beethoven’s, “Don’t give up and keep going!” gesture for his friend. Don’t miss this wonderful program.
