We’ve joined three little operas and a team of extraordinarily talented artists and creators in mutual weirdness – Gertrude Opera’s triple bill is a window through time (beginning with a comic opera examining the creative and casting process by Mozart’s arch-rival), ANTONIO SALIERI in ‘First the Music, Then the Words’, in the opera-directing debut of well-known Film-TV-Theatre actor/director JEREMY STANFORD.
Also directed by JEREMY STANFORD is Dr Miracle, the prizewinning first opera of GEORGES BIZET (composer of Carmen and Pearl Fishers) – proving that the helicopter parent may not be a new phenomenon.
Fresh from her MIFF debut with award-winning short film LOCKER ROOM, 22 year old VCA graduate GRETA NASH directs MENOTTI’S The Telephone for the I-PHONE age, subtitled ‘Screen-time or Scream- time’. An enjoyable, intimate, memorable trio of operas sung in English.
First-timers encouraged to give opera a try, especially young people, with $25 tickets for under 25s.
Featuring Music Director and Conductor of Opera Australia’s Sydney Harbour seasons since 2013, BRIAN CASTLES-ONION, AM (courtesy of Opera Australia) In association with German-based Australian conductor/pianist Matthew Toogood, Brian will have coached and prepared Gertrude Opera’s Young Artists, and will conduct from the piano.
The title role of Dr Miracle is to be performed by one of Opera Australia’s new principal artist recruits, Melbourne tenor Michael Petrucelli, with Gertrude Opera artists from Australia and overseas: Bethany Hill, soprano (SA), Juliet Dufour, soprano (Paris, FR) Allegra Giagu mezzo soprano (NSW/NYC) Lisa Parker soprano (Melbourne) Henry Shaw (Melbourne) Darcy Carroll bass baritone (Melbourne) and Joshua Erdelyi-Gotz baritone (Melbourne).
