Janitsch & the Musical Academy at the Glebe Music Festival
17 November 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEDT
$10 – $20
The Freitags-Akademien (Friday Academies) were private musical entertainments established by Johann Gottlieb Janitsch, who belonged to the eminent artistic milieu of the court of Frederick the Great. Our concerts replicate this facet of 18th-century concert life which took place in Berlin and Potsdam, offering music for a variety of instrumental combinations by Janitsch and esteemed contemporaries such as Franz Benda, Christoph Schaffrath, and the Graun brothers. In particular we reawaken the lost art of the Quadro Sonata for three concertante instruments and bass, which were regarded in their time as outstanding models of contrapuntal skill. New editions by Peter Maddigan include unique scorings for transverse flute and oboes d’amore.
