Oriana Choir | Mozart’s Requiem + Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass

15 May 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST

$43 – $47

Celebrated Australian conductor Andrew Wailes directs a full scale performance of two magnificent and contrasting symphonic choral works, Mozart’s famous and powerful “Requiem in D minor”, and Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s luminous and uplifting “Sunrise Mass” – widely regarded as one of the most popular choral works of our time.

Presenting this magnificent concert will be the Sunshine Coast’s premier choir, the 85 voice Oriana Choir, accompanied by Bisbane’s Sinfonia of St Andrew’s. Joining these two fine ensembles will be four outstanding soloists: Elisabeth Wallis Gaedtke (soprano), Anne Fulton (mezzo soprano),  Philip Prendergast (tenor), and Shaun Brown (Bass). All will be under the direction  of conductor Andrew Wailes, best known for his work as Artistic Director & Chief Conductor of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.

The combined program is a reflection of current times, with the Sunrise Mass depicting hope, peace and light in a dawning post-Covid world,  and the haunting Requiem representing the mourning for all that has been lost.

The Mozart Requiem was the composer’s final great composition, but was famously left incomplete at the time of his death. Mozart’s Requiem has always been surrounded by mystery and intrigue, sparking numerous romantic exaggerations. A lucrative commission by an anonymous stranger – interpreted by Mozart himself as a herald of his own premature death – led to many other tales and exaggerated stories in the nineteenth century, and became the basis for many dramatic works on Mozart’s life in the twentieth century. Despite being left unfinished, the Requiem itself remains one of the most intimate, fervent and profound of Mozart’s works.

Ola Gjeilo’s exquisite Sunrise Mass is an uplifting, evocative and captivating modern mass. Written for double choir and extended string orchestra, it paints a series of emotional landscapes, combining voice and strings to create a sublime musical experience. Listeners are taken on a journey from the starry heavens to the darkest emotions of human existence, all of which attempt to humanize the traditional texts of the Christian liturgy and make them relevant in a more secular world.

A concert not to be missed!
