Omega Ensemble: Schubert’s Trout
27 July @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm AEST
Perhaps no other piece in the chamber music repertoire has yet to surpass the popularity of Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, nicknamed The Trout. Making top ten lists of the best Classical music repertoire, time and time again, this playful and engaging masterpiece delights audiences year after year. Its wistful melodies, rich and colourful harmonies, coupled with its light and lively character, sit happily alongside Schubert’s Octet in F major. The Octet boasts the largest scale of any chamber work by Schubert, written for clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello and double bass. While the piece is heavily based on Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, the melody and beauty that infuse it are quintessentially Schubert, and justify the work’s enduring popularity.
