Step into a tale of love and hope…
In an Australian debut, China National Opera and Dance Drama Theatre present a modern production of the classic Chinese opera The Legend of Chinese Song Fairy – Opera Liu Sanjie for the first time outside China.
Among the myths and legends of the Zhuang ethnic group, Liu Sanjie, a folk singer known as the “Song Fairy”, is perhaps one of their most iconic figures. With her songs, it is said, she gives a voice to the impoverished and people who suffer from inequality as she sings about her yearning for love.
A groundbreaking 1961 musical film named Liu Sanjie popularised Chinese folk songs through the Chinese diaspora, relating the story of a legendary folk singer from the Zhuang minority people in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the male protagonist, A Niu, fight against oppressive forces, express their love for each other and demonstrate the integrity and courage of the Zhuang people, set against the region’s scenic beauty. Even after half a century, several of the songs from the film are still remembered and recognised by many today.
Zhao Haifeng, producer of the opera said, “Liu Sanjie is a cultural icon of Chinese folk music. Adapting the beautiful story into opera could allow more and more people to know about Guilin and the classic folk songs.”
Experience the allure and exuberance of iconic Chinese folk songs in this special one off concert event at Arts Centre Melbourne Hamer Hall.
