Out of the Shadows: Opening Night Gala – The Seven Deadly Sins
5 August @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST
A presentation of symphonic and dance works by Jewish refugees. Werner Baer (Berlin via Singapore) wrote The Test of Strength for the Bodenwieser Ballet in 1953, while Marcel Lorber (Vienna) wrote Schuld-Kain for the troupe during their tour of Columbia in 1938.
HA Peter, chorus master at the Vienna State Opera, wrote his Fantasia after fleeing to Finland and finally Sweden. Georg Tintner wrote Trauermusik in flight from Vienna to London to Auckland in the years 1939 to 1941. Simon Parmet (Finland) wrote music for the staging of An-sky’s play Dybbuk in Helsinki in 1934, and this will be accompanied by a choreographed dance solo.
The second half of the evening is a fully staged version of The Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. A ballet chanté(sung ballet), this work was written in Paris after the composer and writer had fled Berlin, and is as fresh and relevant today as it was in 1933.
