Riverside presents Manasamitra

Join Riverside Theatres for this unique musical experience and be transported into a magical, relaxed setting with soothing sounds and meditative light projections.

Inspired by traditional Indian lullabies, this wondrous show captures timeless night-time sounds from around the world; chirping cicadas; the call of the night jar; the soft fall of rain; and locates them within the rhythmic pattern and soothing cadence of a lullaby.

About the performers:

  • Supriya Nagarajan

Supriya is the Artistic Director of Manasamitra and works internationally as a vocalist. Originally trained in South Indian classical music, Supriya works with a number of artists from other genres, creating new musical vocabularies through collaboration. She also works in the education and community sectors, developing a range of projects, using music within a social context.

Supriya has developed work around the theme of lullaby with partners in Scandinavia, including: The Ultima Contemporary Music Festival, Oslo, the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

  • Duncan Chapman

Duncan is a Lincoln-based composer/sound artist who regularly works with many leading music organisations in the UK including The Royal Opera House, Spitalfields Music, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Britten Sinfonia, Wigmore Hall, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Sound Festival, BBC and Sound & Music. He is a frequent traveller to more exotic locations with projects and performances in Tokyo, Singapore, Switzerland, Budapest and throughout Europe.

Much of his work involves composing and devising work with groups and often results in sound installations, recordings and multi-media performances.

  • Rafael Karlen

Rafael is an award-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger and enjoys creating music for a variety of ensembles across a broad range of styles. Since releasing his debut album in 2008, Rafael has continued to build a reputation as one of the more creative, exciting and surprising musicians on the Australian music scene. Rafael’s music has been performed by small jazz groups, rock and pop ensembles, big bands through to chamber orchestras and string quartets.
