AWO & ANAM: Messiaen’s Turangalila-Symphonie
29 July @ 8:00 pm - 9:45 pm AEST
ONE NIGHT ONLY
Simone Young AM returns to the Australian World Orchestra to conduct the AWO in a unique mentoring collaboration with musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) for a one-off performance of Messiaen’s mammoth Turangalila-Symphonie.
- Timothy Young, piano
- Jacob Abela, ondes Marteno
Messiaen’s Turangalîla is both a monumental symphony and a virtuosic piano concerto, an epic symphonic “love song” demanding the full commitment of over one hundred orchestral musicians. Turangalîla is considered one of the most important pieces of the 20th century and is scored for a huge orchestra, with multiple percussionists, brass, winds and a virtuosic piano solo which will be performed by Timothy Young and featuring Jacob Abela on the electronic ondes Martenot – an instrument familiar to fans of Hitchcock’s soundtracks.
The performance will be the culmination of a unique artistic collaboration between the AWO and ANAM where Australia’s next generation of musical talent are mentored by Australia’s finest musicians from both home and abroad.
