Sydney University Graduate Choir: Puccini – Messa di Gloria & 2019 Joan Carden Award
11 August @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm AEST
Tickets: Adults $50 | Pensioners (no Seniors Card) $40 | Children 16 and under & full-time students $25
Sydney University Graduate Choir’s August concert features Giacomo Puccini’s youthful Messa di Gloria. This work, written as a graduation exercise, already reveals much of the mastery of his mature operatic works. It is thus a fitting work for a concert featuring the finalists of the 2019 Joan Carden Award competition. These exceptional young singers, at the beginning of their careers, will demonstrate their talents for judges and audience alike as they perform famous opera arias by the great masters. This year the audience will again participate in a vote for a “People’s Choice” award. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the concert.
Puccini’s Messa di Gloria
Another highlight of the concert will be a performance by the Sydney University Graduate Choir of Puccini’s exuberant Messa di Gloria, which was written by the young composer as a graduation exercise.Accompanied by full orchestra and the organ of the Great Hall, and with soloists Simon Kim, tenor, and Adrian Tamburini, bass, this work reveals much of the mastery of Puccini’s mature operatic works, and features an extensive and ‘operatic’ Gloria which is the core of the work and the reason for its title.
