The Sydney University Graduate Choir and its Music Director, Christopher Bowen OAM, invite you to share the magic of music, presenting Brahms choral masterpiece, A German Requiem in the Sydney Town Hall.
This concert will be part of the Choir’s Sydney Sings™️ … series. They will be joined again by their Guest Choir, together forming a chorus of 200 voices, accompanied by a full orchestra of professional musicians brought together specially for this occasion. The richly immersive sound of the Sydney Town Hall provides a perfect setting for this performance.
A German Requiem shows Brahms at the height of his powers, as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic age. It is a towering work of the choral repertoire, full of comfort and hope. Throughout, Brahms succeeds in finding words of uncommon emotional beauty and power. While the music conveys a strong spiritual feeling, the composer avoided references to judgment and the after-life, focussing instead on the living. Brahms himself admitted that he would gladly have named the work ‘A Human Requiem’. Rather than using the traditional Latin text, this work draws on the Lutheran Bible, beginning with the words ‘Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted’. This concert will also include a performance of Brahms’ Tragic Overture.
