The Brandenburg Quartet
14 April @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST$20 – $30
Discover the joy of both well-loved and little-known quartets of the classical repertoire played on period instruments and in period style with this intimate concert by the Brandenburg Quartet, formed by the principal string players of the renowned Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
Join the Brandenburg Quartet for its debut performance at the Independent Theatre. This is Australia’s newest and most exciting period instrument ensemble and the first string quartet in the country dedicated to performing on period instruments.
It brings together the four principals of the multi ARIA Award-winning Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s string section: violinists Shaun Lee-Chen (Perth) and Ben Dollman (Adelaide), violist Monique O’Dea (Sydney), and cellist Jamie Hey (Melbourne). Performing exclusively on gut strings, the group seeks to explore and shed light on little-known works and composers, in addition to well-loved quartets of the classical repertoire.
- DURANTE | Concerto for Strings in G Minor
- ROMBERG | String Quartet in F Major, Op.1/3
- HAYDN | String Quartet in D Minor, Op.76/2
Francesco Durante’s four-part Concerto for Strings will bring forth fiery colours and interplay in a way that precedes heralds the innovations of Josef Haydn.
Followed by a fresh voice of the period, Andreas Romberg, an early colleague of Beethoven’s whose work is a striking blend of Germanic strength and charming Italianate flair, particularly in the virtuosic 1st Violin part.
Then for a stormy and dramatic finale, be swept away by the second quartet of Haydn’s great Opus 76, a piece collection written at his creative peak under the free rein of the Esterhazy court.
