Spretzzatura! Early Italian Baroque Songs & Sonatas
With: Anna Sandstrom (Soprano) & Matthew Manchester (Cornetto)
Music by: Montiverdi, Caccini, Peri and Rasi.
With the sublime soprano Anna Sandstrom and the virtuosic early brass specialist Matt Manchester, with ‘Spretzzatura! Early Italian Baroque Songs & Sonatas’ The Muffat Collective presents a program that explores the Italian concept of Spretzzatura!
Translated as ‘effortless mastery’, Sprezzatura encompassed almost all areas of early 17th Century Italian courtly life. The Grove Dictionary describes it as “the true source of grace….revealed in the effortless resolution of all difficulties.”” Sprezzatura developed into such a desirable character trait and had infiltrated so many aspects of the Italian court that by the beginning of the 17th century, the concept informed every arts discipline of the time.
The program features the music of the musical pioneers Montiverdi, Caccini, Peri and Rasi. Anna Sandstom will sing with Sprezzatura, popular madrigals of the time accompanied a flowering display of ornaments by the virtuosic cornetto (Matthew Manchester) and violins.
This concert is a rare opportunity to enjoy a special form of music making with 17th century experts Anna and Matthew Manchester. Its ultimate purpose is to strike into the very heart of human emotion and awake the passions!
The Muffat Collective comprises four period instrument specialists that are extremely passionate about performing chamber music from the 17th and 18th century. All top graduates from The Royale Conservatoire of The Hague and Utrecht, the four members have returned to Australia after extensive experience playing with some of Europe’s leading Baroque orchestras. The Collective would like to give you a genuine and moving experience by sharing with you incredibly rare and often unperformed works by forgotten masters; music that is full of vitality, energy and emotions that speak to us now, as much as they did in the past.
Afternoon tea served from 2:30pm.
Concert commences at 3:30pm.
