The Song Company: Power Chords Attached

11 May 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST

Tickets: Adult $65 | Concession $60 | Under 30 $30

Join The Song Company and Melbourne metal band The Omnific with the rising bass guitar duo, Matthew Fackrell and Toby Peterson-Stewart in Power Chords Attached playing the sounds of 12th-century composer Magister Pérotin for the second national tour for 2019. Song Company singers join forces with The Omnific for a resonant mix of plainchant, dynamic basslines, and 12th-century organum from Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. An ethereal and earthy combination of sounds you’ve never heard before, Power Chords Attached is a dynamic collaboration across genres sparked by a uniting interest in the deep resonances of vocal cords, struck strings, and powerful harmonies.

The Omnific has already made a name for their unique rhythmic interplay and wordless metallic fantasias. The performance will feature their popular songs Kismet, Objets de Vertu, and launch new track That’s all she wrote, interleaved with multi-voice chanting and improvisation by The Song Company. Together they will perform an inspired arrangement of 12th century composer Magister Pérotin’s masterpiece Viderunt omnes, echoed by a high soprano in his most haunting of songs, Beata viscera. French composer Pérotin is known as having introduced the composition of polyphony in four parts into Western Music.

Antony Pitts, Artistic Director of The Song Company, says: “We always strive to create the most exciting and beautiful music with all our guest artists and partners. This is something else again: attaching power chords from 12th-century Paris to the melodies and rhythms of Matt and Toby’s bass guitars promises to be a stunning ride – leave your preconceptions behind and open your ears wide!”

The Omnific’s Matt Fack and Toby Peterson-Stewart agree: “We were thoroughly intrigued when Antony presented this idea to us: 2 bassists and a vocal ensemble! The voice, allows us to take new influence from various elements of music we have not yet explored. Dynamics, tone, contour, all can be interpreted in many ways through the voice, and we’re thrilled to be meshing these elements with the Bass Guitar… we can’t wait to experience it with all the other performers and the audience.”
