Songs that are nice, songs that are nasty, songs that are just plain weird. But they will all charm you in one way or another.
Found in a second-hand bookshop in Willoughby, the original Winnie-the-Pooh song-book with music by Fraser-Wilson and lyrics, of course, by A.A. Milne. For many of those whose childhoods included Christopher Robin, this will be a nostalgic journey back in time. But don’t get too lost in sentiment because nestled up against these songs of innocence are the somewhat sinister and unsettling songs from A Charm of Lullabies by Benjamin Britten, whose lyrics include various poets like Robert Burns and William Blake. Diana Blom’s Three Walter de la Mare songs weave their own spells and magic. Ann Carr-Boyd offers some floral gifts.
Intertwining the song-sets are sonatas by Johann Christian Bach – tuneful, joyful and charming – as we have discovered in our recent delvings into his music.
Songstress Danielle Grant’s warm and reassuring voice is just what’s needed for Charmed.
Soprano Danielle Grant was a stunning performer of the texts in a range of languages…the distinct flavours of each song were instantly captured. Paul Nolan, Sydney Arts Guide, 2015
