For the early settler in the new colony of New South Wales, the arrival of the tall ships was a moment of great excitement. The ships were bringing merchandise from ‘home’, stuff that couldn’t yet be made in the colony, and which was important for the finer things in life, like fabrics, books, fashion magazines, musical instruments and sheet music, things that helped make a home.

From Sydney Living Museums collection, we find music for piano-forte, voice and violin that is varied in style and content. We meet some familiar names like Schubert and Haydn, but more often than not, those that are unfamiliar, but much-loved as reminders of home.
