Under the direction of the inimitable Dr Nicholas Milton AM, DISCOVERY opens with Composer-in-Residence Nigel Westlake’s Cudmirrah Fanfare, well familiar to listeners to ABC’s Radio National for which it served as the official greeting for many years.
Subsequently, two of Australia’s most accomplished musicians, the irresistible Dimity Hall and the phenomenal Julian Smiles join together for a performance of Brahms’ unique Concerto for Violin and Cello. This performance will transfix you with its exquisite grandeur as magical melodies weave their way between the two instruments in an astonishingly supple musical conversation.
In a dramatic conclusion to the 2018 Season and an extravagant year of sublime music-making, Dvořák’s New World Symphony comes to effervescent life in the incredible Concert Hall at the Concourse. The Czech composer imbued this work with haunting and evocative recollections of his native music, coloured by shades of touching tributes to music he got to know in America. His expedition through such diverse musical cultures reveals countless variations of tone and style nimbly juxtaposed in an amazingly unified symphonic entity.
