With talents that are too often underestimated, “pianists who choose to accompany” seem destined to remain in the shadow of the “soloist”, even when composers have conceived their music for a creative partnership. In today’s program we encourage you to focus on the highly specialised personal and musical skills required of professional accompanists. You will see that their role is far from being subsidiary, and is a rather an integral part of an artistic relationship, interpreting great music together for your entertainment. Sydney Conservatorium of Music has a unique program of Piano Accompaniment Studies and each year awards the Geoffrey Parsons Australian Scholarship in memory of one of the world’s greatest exponents of the Art of Accompaniment, who is also one of our graduates. Help us keep accompaniment alive.
