Starting at: 3:00 PM

Venue: St Johns Southgate (20 City Rd, Southbank, VIC, 3006)

Event summary:

The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank U. Pam open their 43rd Subscription Season with the beautiful music of two of the great classical master composers.

Multi-award winning soprano Lee Abrahmsen sings arias from three of Mozart’s greatest operas: Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi fan Tutte as well as the concert aria Nehmt meinen Dank, K383. Lee is appearing as the Countess in Opera Australia’s production of Marriage of Figaro later in the year and she will sing the two famous Countess arias in our concert.

Mozart wrote masterpieces in virtually every genre, but his favourite from a very early age right up to his death was opera and he particularly enjoyed writing for the female voice.

The concert includes a short piece by Donizetti (1797-1848), Introduction in D minor, and concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No 5 in B flat to celebrate 220 years since his birth (1797-1828). This is one of Schubert’s most melodious and popular works ,written in three weeks at the age of 19. It is intentionally very Mozartean as Schubert adored Mozart.
