SUMMARY:Opera Bites | Opera Lecture Series - The Operas of the Age of Puccini
DESCRIPTION:Since 2003\, Opera Bites Co-Founder Murray Dahm has delivered accessible\, friendly and informative lectures\, drawing on its history\, culture and music. Enjoy exploring a variety of areas of operatic history from composers and voice types through to genres and quirky bits of opera trivia. \nFrom Verdi and Puccini to opera darlings such as Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland\, Murray presents weekly fun\, informative and thoroughly delightful talks\, abundantly illustrated with audio and visual excerpts. \nMurray’s style is popular with seasoned opera-goers and newcomers alike. Come and revel in the joy of opera! \n\n  \nThe Operas of the Age of Puccini \nIn the late 19th century\, Italian opera faced something of a crisis. It’s greatest composer\, Giuseppe Verdi\, was now in his 60’s and so the search was on to find the next great Italian opera composer. Several candidates presented themselves. Today we might think Giacomo Puccini was the obvious candidate – with operas like La Boheme\, Tosca\, Madame Butterfly\, Turandot which all remain immensely popular – but\, at the time\, the matter was not so clear cut. Come and join me for this entertaining and informative 10-week course exploring the operas of Puccini and his contemporaries. \nFull term enrolments and Casual Drop In available. 10-Week Class = $350 / Casual Drop In = $40 per class

SUMMARY:Meredith Beardmore | The Long Blue Horizon
DESCRIPTION:Two soundworlds collide: 18th century Paris & 21st century Tasman Peninsula. \nHistorical flautist Meredith Beardmore takes her flutes through unexpected terrains. Her recent release The Long Blue Horizon was created on the Tasman Peninsula. Inspired by the extraordinary landscape of the peninsula\, the album combines historical flutes and field recordings. \nIn this intimate concert\, Meredith performs music inspired by the tessellated pavement and remarkable cave and nestles these amongst her flute’s original setting: luscious French baroque chamber music\, where she’ll be joined by the incomparable Simon Martyn-Ellis on theorbo. They’ll perform suites by Hotteterre and Monteclair with movements named after places\, people\, and nature\, showing that music has been inspired by the environment regardless of the century or continent. \nArtists \nMeredith Beardmore\, historical flutes & field recordings \nSimon Martyn-Ellis\, theorbo

SUMMARY:Maria Anna Mozart Concert Tour | SYO perform Jessica Wells' Mozart's Sister
DESCRIPTION:The Maria Anna Mozart Concert Tour is setting out to bring one of history’s most extraordinary untold stories to concert halls across Australia\, shining a timely spotlight on the persistent gender gap in classical music programming. \nInspired by the AACTA Award-winning documentary Mozart’s Sister\, the tour will feature orchestras and ensembles nationwide performing the film’s powerful original score live\, composed by one of Australia’s most celebrated composers\, Jessica Wells\, with visuals from director Madeleine Hetherton-Miau. \nIn 2025\, only 14.6% of works performed by Australian orchestras were composed by female or gender diverse composers. The Maria Anna Mozart Concert Tour is a direct response to that challenge\, drawing on the story of Maria Anna Nannerl Mozart\, whose extraordinary talent was erased by the conventions of her time. \nPresented as an immersive visual concert\, each performance combines excerpts from the AACTA award-winning film Mozart’s Sister\, live orchestral performance\, and live narration to re-tell Maria Anna Mozart’s remarkable life. \nSydney Youth Orchestras will bring this story to a new generation\, featuring The Peter Seymour Orchestra conducted by James Pensini and The Richard Gill Chamber Orchestra conducted by Kate Morgan. \nThe tour is presented with support from Create NSW and the Mindaroo Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:James Ehnes with Orion Weiss | at UKARIA
DESCRIPTION:Superstar Canadian violinist James Ehnes joins forces with his longtime duo partner\, the celebrated American pianist Orion Weiss\, to present a recital of duo repertoire. Ehnes is one of the great violinists on the global stage: a fixture as concerto soloist with orchestras like the New York and London Philharmonics and the Boston Symphony\, and recitalist at Carnegie Hall\, Verbier Festival and other venues across Europe\, Ehnes is a two-time GRAMMY Award-winner with an extensive discography. Weiss is one of the most sought-after concert pianists in the US: a regular soloist with LA and New York Philharmonics\, he is renowned for his ‘powerful technique and exceptional insight’. For their recital at UKARIA\, Ehnes and Weiss offer a rare opportunity for Australian audiences to experience two star soloists in an exceptionally intimate setting. \nThe lush extravagance of Korngold’s Suite from Much Ado About Nothing is answered with a different kind of cantabile in Brahms’ tender\, intimate G major sonata: sometimes referred to as the Regenlied (Rain song) sonata\, its first listeners described the work as possessing an atmosphere of ‘resigned reconciliation’. \nFollowing an interval\, Ehnes and Weiss travel in time in order to contrast French and Norwegian takes on the violin-piano duo. While the first world war raged\, French composer Claude Debussy published his only work for this instrumentation\, a sonata he described as ‘full of tumultuous joy’. Mercurial\, dream-like\, laced with an ardent optimism\, the sonata would become Debussy’s last composition. Edward Grieg’s Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano is also the last chamber work the composer penned. Alternating between brooding darknesses and a light-strewn slow movement\, the Sonata ends in a jubilant C major – Grieg anticipating Debussy’s ‘joy’. \nJames Ehnes | Violin\nOrion Weiss | Piano \n\nPROGRAM\n\nErich Korngold (1897–1957)\nSuite from Much Ado About Nothing\, Op. 11 [14′] \nI. SUMMARY:Zelman Symphony Orchestra | Beethoven 256
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven fans were left disappointed in 2020 with a somewhat curtailed 250th Anniversary celebration. We make up for it with this concert devoted to the bad-boy of Classical music. \nThe Coriolan Overture was written as an introduction to Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy about the legendary\, defiant Roman general\, Coriolanus. The music depicts his aggressive military power\, but it famously does not end in triumph. Instead\, the work gradually unravels and fades into silence\, mirroring the general’s collapse and ultimately tragic end. \nSymphony No. 4\, while not as famous as the other symphonies\, still displays the lively and dramatic character we’ve come to expect from Beethoven. It shows his wit and lyricism with brilliant scoring for woodwinds. \nSymphony No. 7 is full of relentless\, driving rhythms\, concluding with an ecstatic finale. \nArtists\n\nRick Prakhoff – conductor \nJessica Zuk – conductor \n\nProgram\n\nBeethoven – Coriolan: Overture \nBeethoven – Symphony no. 4 in B♭ Op. 60 \nBeethoven – Symphony no. 7 in A Op. 92

DESCRIPTION:In the hands of Romantics like Bruckner and Brahms\, music became increasingly expressive\, harmonically inventive\, passionate\, theatrical. In the twentieth century\, composers like Herbert Howells\, Ralph Vaughan Williams\, Amy Beach and Samuel Barber resisted the atonality and serialism embraced by their contemporaries and continued to explore the rich extremes of lush harmony and sweeping melodies. \nThese composers as a group – the voices of the Greater Romantic movement – provide us with a program that runs the gamut from emotionally-charged to blissfully peaceful. \nARTISTS \nAustralian Chamber Choir \nPROGRAM \nAnton Bruckner – (works TBA)\nJohannes Brahms – (works TBA)\nHerbert Howells – (works TBA)\nRalph Vaughan Williams – (works TBA)\nAmy Beach – (works TBA)\nSamuel Barber – (works TBA)

SUMMARY:Luke Zhang and Sean Kim | Restless Forms
DESCRIPTION:Two Piano Recitals on Structure\, Memory\, and Collapse\nRestless Forms is a contemporary classical piano recital by Luke Zhang and Sean Kim exploring instability\, transformation\, and the search for artistic identity. \nEmerging from years immersed in conservatorium life — shaped by discipline\, obsession\, uncertainty\, and continual refinement — this program reflects the uneasy transition beyond institutional structure into a more personal and undefined artistic space. \nThrough works that stretch inherited musical forms toward fragmentation and dissolution\, the recital traces a journey from classical clarity into increasingly psychological and atmospheric sound worlds. Dances lose balance\, memories blur\, and fantasy begins to overtake order. \nFeaturing music by Bach\, Beethoven\, Berg\, Ravel\, George Benjamin\, Chopin\, and Schubert\, Restless Forms examines both the evolution of musical language and a deeply human experience: the attempt to find coherence while living through change. Balancing intimacy with intensity\, the program invites audiences into a reflective and emotionally charged sonic landscape shaped by tension\, vulnerability\, and restless transformation. \nPROGRAM \nLuke Zhang\nAlban Berg — Piano Sonata\, Op. 1\nLudwig van Beethoven — Piano Sonata No. 18 in E-flat Major\, Op. 31 No. 3\nMaurice Ravel — La Valse \nInterval \nSean Kim\nJohann Sebastian Bach — Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major\, BWV 852\nMaurice Ravel — Une Barque sur l’océan (Miroirs: no. 3)\nGeorge Benjamin — Meditation on a Theme by Haydn\nFranz Schubert — Fantasie in C Major\, D. 760 “Wanderer Fantasy” \n

SUMMARY:Richard Tognetti & the ANAM Orchestra | Central Park in the Dark
DESCRIPTION:In the first of two concerts during his residency at ANAM\, superstar violinist Richard Tognetti brings together the fascinating sound worlds of American composers Charles Ives and Ruth Crawford Seeger\, alongside a current new voice in Australian music\, Alex Turley\, and the sumptuous late-Romantic sounds of Arnold Schoenberg’s early masterpiece Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night).\n\n\nOften paired together\, Charles Ives’s The Unanswered Question for solo trumpet\, winds and strings\, and Central Park in the Dark for orchestra explore the notion of the individual contemplating the world—our existence and place within it in the first work\, and\, in the second\, the sounds of the world before industrialisation\, “before the combustion engine and radio monopolized the earth and air\,” as Ives noted. \nOriginally written for the Sydney Symphony brass section\, the ANAM Brass musicians unite for a performance of Alex Turley’s Mirage. This brand-new work explores the more subtle and mysterious textures of the loudest of orchestral instruments. Sounds bend and refract around the ensemble\, which is spread throughout the performance space in an ever-shifting harmonic language designed to lose yourself in. \nEqually labyrinthine in its harmonic twists and turns is Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) by Arnold Schoenberg. Pre-dating his revolutionary upheaval of classical music\, this early work for strings showcases ingenious motivic development and a sumptuous romantic language\, telling the story of two lovers and the transfiguration of their love for each other. \nPROGRAM\n\nAlex TURLEY Mirage\nCharles IVES The Unanswered Question \nIVES Central Park in the Dark\nRuth CRAWFORD SEEGER Music for Small Orchestra\nArnold SCHOENBERG Verklärte Nacht\, op. 4 \nARTISTS \nRichard Tognetti director / violin\nANAM Orchestra \nDuration: approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes (no interval) \nSpecial Offer! SUMMARY:Gravity and Other Myths + The Metropolitan Orchestra | LOUDER
DESCRIPTION:Circus meets symphony\n\n\n\nThe intensity is turned up as the beauty and precision of classical music meet the daring physical mastery of circus. When these two disciplines collide\, tradition isn’t abandoned\, it’s reimagined and brought thrillingly to life. \nCreated by multi-award-winning Australian circus company Gravity and Other Myths in collaboration with the Brandenburger Symphoniker\, LOUDER is a powerful new work responding to the noise and complexity of the modern world through the enduring language of classical music. \nOn the Opera House stage\, eight world-class acrobats share the space with 22 musicians from The Metropolitan Orchestra\, conducting by Sarah-Grace Williams\, in a finely balanced exchange of sound and movement. \nThe acrobats’ physicality becomes a visual interpretation of the music itself\, from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major to newly composed works from Sxip Shirey and Quincey Grant. Human towers rise and fall\, bodies are launched and caught\, structures build and dissolve\, all meticulously calibrated to the conductor’s beat. \nThough they come from different artistic worlds\, both musicians and acrobats are guided by the same principles: timing\, trust\, discipline and precision.
