Each year The Adelaide Youth Orchestras provide around 250 of South Australia’s most talented young musicians with the opportunity to flourish in a vibrant and exciting musical environment – developing orchestral, musical and team skills with their peers.
AdYO’s young musicians come together each week during term time for individual and group tuition and rehearsals, their hard work culminating in over 20 inspirational orchestral performances each year.
Our four orchestras include the Adelaide Youth Strings for primary school aged children, Adelaide Youth Sinfonia for high school and tertiary aged students, Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra for woodwind, brass and percussion students at high school and tertiary level and the flagship Adelaide Youth Orchestra – which attracts about 80 of South Australia’s most accomplished musicians aged 12 to 24. Alongside the four orchestras, our students participate as members of smaller string and percussion ensembles, performing at a range of community and corporate functions.

More about AdYO
AdYO’s artistic leadership is provided by Elder Conservatorium’s Head of Strings, Associate Professor Keith Crellin OAM. Weaving his own magic as well as ensuring our students engage with other leading musical educators, including professional musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Elder Conservatorium of Music and SA Police Band, Keith inspires and nurtures the next generation of musicians and music lovers. Some of our young musicians will go on to become international soloists, members of Australia’s symphony orchestras or music teachers – but all will gain lifelong benefits from their experience with South Australia’s leading youth music organisation.
Our professional-standard concerts attract a growing audience base and receive consistently high critical acclaim. Each year our senior orchestra presents a three-concert Maestro Series of orchestral masterpieces, while the Adelaide Youth Strings, Adelaide Youth Sinfonia and Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra present an exciting mix of community and schools performances. An annual highlight is AdYO’s Gala Concert where all four orchestras come together to perform in the stunning Adelaide Town Hall. Our expanding outreach activities include community concerts in regional venues and performances in aged care facilities across metropolitan Adelaide.
In late 2013, AdYO launched a new schools program where our orchestras will perform at a number of primary and high schools as part of a broader initiative to inspire fellow students to learn and participate in the arts. In addition to each performance, schools will be provided with curriculum resources, teacher-in-servicing and other practical support to help classroom and instrumental teachers deliver effective and meaningful educational opportunities for their students.
