In these cooler winter months we want some warming background music, to sip our wine and slurp our tea to. The Bitter Suite, released by ABC Jazz, is a great CD for that. Some tracks make you feel like you’ve walked into a classy 1930’s cocktail lounge from a BBC drama, with gorgeous people dressed to the nines swaying to the music. Other tracks are just so relaxing that you feel glad that in fact, you are just sitting at home wearing your uggboots.
The Paul Grabowsky Sextet is to be congratulated for their effortless playing and the way that it has twists, turns and surprises through each song. Track 6, ‘Sisyphus’ is an excellent example of this.
Grabowsky says “the tunes are really about the people who play them”, if that is the case, then this sextet is full of interesting characters!
