Borodin Quartet

20 September 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST
Conservatorium Theatre, Griffith University, 140 Grey Street
South Bank, Queensland 4101 Australia
$30.00 – $106.00

The Borodin Quartet recently marked its 70th anniversary, and while the individual players may have changed, the quartet’s special relationship with Shostakovich remains resolute and their interpretations still carry tremendous gravitas. Tchaikovsky’s early string quartet is one of his most popular works, largely due to the lovely melancholy folk song of the second movement. Wolf’s 1887 Italian Serenade mixes romantic sentiment and mocking wit. Shostakovich’s fifteenth and final string quartet, composed while he was gravely ill, links six adagio movements in a…

Benedetti Elschenbroich Grynyuk Trio

7 November 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEDT
Conservatorium Theatre, Griffith University, 140 Grey Street
South Bank, Queensland 4101 Australia
$50.00 – $106.00

When is a trio not just a trio? When it is this one, comprising three stellar soloists. In their Southern Hemisphere debut, the matchless combined talents of Nicola Benedetti, Leonard Elschenbroich and Alexei Grynyuk will light up the stage. This is chamber music made by an A-team of young guns; and played with love, because they insist on making room for its presence in their busy solo schedules. Given who they are, this ensemble’s program is more than just trios. Instead, it offers a diversity…

Single tickets: Standard $85 | Concession $66 | Under 30 $30 A young man brimming with confidence and sure of a bright future: this is Beethoven at the time of creating his first string quartets. His opus 18 no 4 is quicksilver in its variety of moods and characters, thoroughly conveying both technical mastery and compelling artistic personality. Seventy years later, Brahms displayed a devotion to chamber music that went against the spirit of his times. But like an artist…

Australian String Quartet – Ives Westlake Debussy

17 September 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST
Conservatorium Theatre, Griffith University, 140 Grey Street
South Bank, Queensland 4101 Australia

Single tickets: Standard $85 | Concession $66 | $30 under 30 The music of Charles Ives is made of pictures from a long-lost America, depicted with such vivid immediacy that they seem absolutely alive. Through the magic lantern of his musical imagery, this New England world appears like a nostalgic dream – white-painted churches in autumn forests filled with congregations joyously chanting hymns and spirituals. Not dissimilar to the inquisition that Ives undertakes, Claude Debussy’s quest to liberate sensuality led…
