SUMMARY:ANAM | Steve Reich Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Pioneer of minimalism and the avant-garde in music\, American composer Steve Reich is celebrated in this specially curated performance at the Abbotsford Convent. The ANAM Percussion cohort are joined by their colleagues in the ANAM Piano department to present a trio of works\, highlighting and sharing the versatility of their craft. \nAiming to breach the limitations of the percussive soundscape\, the concert begins with simplicity in Reich’s Music for pieces of wood\, primitive in its use of only claves to form remarkable rhythm and structure. His Sextet stretches the acoustic capacity of percussion in an experimental take on the extension of sound\, drawing out short-lived notes through the use of extended techniques\, such as bowed notes\, and the use of synthesisers. \nTying these pieces together is the premiere of a new work by ANAM percussionist\, Jonathan Parker\, titled Music about Synthesisers\, aptly linking Reich’s music together in a cohesive and riveting program. Come and join us to experience what will be a fascinating concert\, situated on a fine Thursday afternoon in the Rosina Auditorium. \nSteve REICH Music for pieces of wood\nJon PARKER Music about Synthesisers (world premiere)\nREICH Sextet \nANAM Percussion\nANAM Pianos \nApproximate duration: 1 hour with no interval

SUMMARY:ANAM | Masterclass with Nicolas Altstaedt
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, ANAM presents a series of masterclasses by some of the world’s leading classical instrumentalists and pedagogues\, given as part of their work with our musicians on repertoire\, technique and performance. These are up-close\, ‘open lesson’ style masterclasses open to a public audience\, offering priceless insights into the secrets that lie behind a great performance – and unique learning opportunities for music lovers and aspiring musicians alike. \nGerman-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt is one of the most versatile and sought-after artists today. As a soloist\, conductor\, and artistic director\, he performs repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music on both period and modern instruments. \nJoint appearances with composers such as Thomas Adès\, Jörg Widmann\, Fazıl Say and Sofia Gubaidulina have consolidated his reputation as an outstanding interpreter of contemporary music. Wolfgang Rihm\, Sebastian Fagerlund\, Widmann\, Marton Illés and Thomas Larcher (among others) have written concertos and other works for him. Composed for him in 2024\, Liza Lim’s cello concerto A Sutured World was described in a 5-star review in Limelight as “destined to become a signature work of the cello repertoire”. Altstaedt will also premiere new concertos by Francesca Verunelli\, Enno Poppe and Miroslav Srnka in the coming seasons. \nRepertoire and musicians to be announced.\n\nNicolas Altstaedt\nANAM Cellos \n\nANAM’s Masterclasses are supported by the Robert Salzer Foundation. \nPresented in partnership with Musica Viva Australia \nImage credit: Marco Borggreve

SUMMARY:ANAM | The Alchemy of Alban Berg with Jeffrey Means
DESCRIPTION:American conductor Jeffrey Means (Berklee College of Music) leads ANAM musicians in this program tracing the musical world of Alban Berg — a composer who stood between centuries\, traditions and ideas. His music mixes late-Romantic beauty with the sharper edges of modernism\, finding feeling within structure and clarity within chaos. \nThe program begins with Berg’s Seven Early Songs\, a work written in his twenties and steeped in the lush sound world of Mahler and Strauss. The Piano Sonata\, op. 1 follows — a compact\, restless work that already hints at the intensity and precision of his later style. Berg’s arrangement of Johann Strauss II’s waltz Wein\, Weib und Gesäng peels back the glitter of old Vienna to reveal something stranger and more intimate beneath. \nThe concert closes with the Kammerkonzert\, op. 8\, written for his mentors Schoenberg and Webern — a piece that captures Berg’s transformation from student to master. In its intricate textures and fierce lyricism lies the “alchemy” of Berg’s art: the turning of emotion into form\, and form back into emotion.\n\nAlban BERG Sieben frühe Lieder\nBERG Piano Sonata\, op. 1\nJohann STRAUSS II arr. SUMMARY:ELISION & ANAM
DESCRIPTION:ELISION’s three-year partnership with ANAM has become a meeting point between generations of performers who share a drive to explore new forms of musical expression. \nThis program begins with Milica Djordjević’s Nalet\, introducing a gripping and persevering energy as the ensemble pushes determinedly against an unseen resistance\, delineative of Djordjević’s struggle when composing this piece. Xenakis puts a spin on the sound an orchestra can create in Jalons\, each movement developing upon rhythmic construction and extended techniques to allude to what one considers to be “(orchestral) colour”. A new work by Richard Barrett\, written in his Codex style and incorporating electronics\, continues this exploration of sonic texture and density\, featuring both ANAM and ELISION musicians. And to conclude\, a duet between clarinet and cello written by Liza Lim brings this performance to a close\, in an intimate intertwining of tone\, register\, and ambience. \nThis exciting collaboration blurs the boundaries between sound and silence\, structure and spontaneity\, and will be an intriguing listen for any lover of the avant-garde and contemporary music. \nMilica DJORDJEVIĆ Nalet\nIannis XENAKIS Jalons\nRichard BARRETT New Work (to be announced)\nLiza LIM inguz (fertility) \nELISION Ensemble\nANAM Musicians

SUMMARY:Ensemble Offspring | EO x ANAM: A Journey Through Our Time
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble Offspring joins ANAM musicians for a program curated by Artistic Director\, Claire Edwardes OAM. A Journey Through Our Time brings together music written by composers from different corners of the world\, many of whom have worked closely with the ensemble. \nThe program features works by First Nations composers\, Nardi Simpson (Yuwaalaraay) and Eric Avery (Ngiyampaa\, Yuin and Gumbangirr)\, Australians Holly Harrison and Kate Moore\, and two voices from America – Chen Yi and Jennifer Higdon. These composers who each offer their own take on rhythm\, lyricism and sound. Led by Claire Edwardes\, Véronique Serret\, Blair Harris and Jason Noble\, the concert moves from intimate stillness to bold\, percussive energy. \n“I curated this program for the combined talents of Ensemble Offspring and the students of ANAM\,” says Claire Edwardes. “As a musical journey that is both pedagogical for the students and inspiring for the audience\, the works traverse a huge breadth of styles and themes.” \nFrom Nardi Simpson’s Wilga’s Last Dance\, based on the only traditional Yuwaalaraay melody ever recorded\, to Eric Avery’s Gliding\, built on overlapping melodic lines and quiet momentum\, this concert reflects how music carries memory. Chen Yi’s Qi balances intensity with precision; Holly Harrison’s bend\, boogie\, break brings groove and mischief; Kate Moore’s Fern unfolds slowly and delicately; and Jennifer Higdon’s Zaka finishes the night in a burst energy. \nPROGRAM \nNardi SIMPSON Wilga’s Last Dance\nEric AVERY Gliding\nChen YI Qi\nHolly HARRISON bend\, boogie\, break\nKate MOORE Fern\nJennifer HIGDON Zaka \nEnsemble Offspring:\n       Claire Edwardes (Alum 1998) percussion\n       Blair Harris (Alum 2005) cello\n       Lamorna Nightingale flute\n       Jason Noble (Alum 1996) clarinet\nANAM Musicians
