Of Birds and Angels – The Song Company in Canberra

by | Dec 10, 2013 | Ambassador thoughts

Although it features some Christmas music, this concert is a far cry from your usual carols concert. Ancient songs in French, Russian, Spanish, Czech and Latin were contrasted with contemporary compositions, and sacred solemnity was juxtaposed with cheeky wit. Percussion instruments appeared for some pieces, played by the singers, to spectacular effect.

A highlight for me was hearing guest artist Tobias Cole, premier Australian Countertenor, and the way that his special voice brought life and depth to ‘the Song Company sound’ that we know and love.

The piece I enjoyed best was ‘Le chant des Oyseaux’ by Janequin. Sung by just the men, this song featured lively bird calls. Another fun moment was Christopher Wilcock’s piece, ‘Etiquette with Angels’.

This Canberra concert was a full house, standing room only, so concert attendees would be wise to pre-purchase tickets. Alternatively, subscriptions are available to ensure that you won’t miss a note. If you haven’t yet heard the Song Company, you should! Experience a unique Australian sound, you won’t be disappointed.
