Opening in 1911 as the North Sydney Coliseum, the Independent is Sydney’s oldest Edwardian theatre and with one of the best acoustics in Sydney is home to some of the most exciting chamber performances in Sydney today. In 2019 the Theatre celebrates 80 years since Doris Fitton reopened the Theatre and named it the Independent Theatre.

Location
The Theatre is located at  269 Miller Street North Sydney, opposite Stanton library, and near North Sydney Oval. 

Getting here
There are many public transport options to get you here. North Sydney Station is just ten minutes walk away, or you can take a bus up the hill. The Stanton library bus-stop is directly opposite the Theatre on Miller St. Take bus number 202, 203, 207, 208, 209 or 263 from Wynyard or North Sydney Station. 

Parking
The Theatre has no parking on premises. However, there is ample street parking on Miller Street  and the streets surrounding the Theatre, and a council car-park on Ridge Street offers free weekend parking.

Accessibility
The Theatre has level access through to the front seats of the Auditorium, accessed from the laneway to the left of the building. There are also two accessible bathrooms located adjacent to the front row in the Auditorium.

Box Office
The Box Office opens 1 hour before the performance start time. If you have selected ‘Box Office Collection’ you may collect your ticket at this time. Please note that for catered events the Box Office still opens one hour before the performance time.

Tickets
If you have selected ‘Print at Home’ but your ticket didn’t arrive, or you have lost your ticket, or just left it at home, don’t worry – Box Office staff will be able to print out your ticket for you on the day.
No need to carry a print-out – If you can show us a ‘Print at home’ ticket with a bar code on your phone that is all you need.

Payments
The Independent Theatre no longer accepts cash – bring your ‘tap and go’ for a quick and easy solution.

Food and Beverages
Light snacks and refreshments are generally available for purchase from one hour before the performance time at the Theatre, or visit one of the many surrounding cafes and restaurants for something more substantial.
