The Song Company are an exciting group of singers. If you hear them perform, you may well be blown away by their unique voices, musicianship and sensitivity to the texts that they bring to life in song.
Their current concert series, ‘Dowland’s Lute‘, offers the Song Company’s wonderful voices, paired with Nigel North, Lutenist.
It was my first time listening to the lute, a very expressive instrument, sometimes so imperceptibly woven into the harmony, that I confused it for a human voice.
With music mainly composed by lute superstar, John Dowland (1563 – 1626), this concert features beloved madrigals,along with lesser known works. Favourites included ‘Come again, Sweet love doth now invite‘ and ‘Now is the Month of Maying‘, vividly brought to life by the Song Company’s cheeky, fresh interpretations. The warm, earthy harmonies of duos, trios and six part songs seamlessly mingled with dances and laments on the lute. Clive Birch’s superb Bass voice was a highlight of the evening.
Any music lover would enjoy the experience of this concert, as the songs and poetry are so lovingly shared, as to make the audience feel a part of the stories of love, loss, and sheer frivolity.
This concert series continues with performances in Sydney, Newcastle and Melbourne.
