Classical Music Australia | Pinchas Zukerman

20th April 2026, Hamer Hall, Melbourne, VIC

The Occasion

A trip to Hamer Hall on the cusp of Anzac Day — a time for reflection, gratitude and memory of service. How fitting, then, to bear witness to a towering force who has loomed large on the artistic landscape for five decades. Zukerman has done it all and earned our respect and salutations.

A recital with the great man and his fabulous pianist sidekick tonight, Olga Sitvoketsky.

Zukerman’s resumé is extensive, and its vastness is not easily synopsised here. Below is a short bio from a time when this critic, wearing the hat of composer and working with Canada’s world-renowned author Margaret Atwood, was performing The Penelopiad while Zukerman was Artistic Director at the National Arts Centre of Canada.

Tenure — Artistic Director, Canada

“Pinchas Zukerman served as a central artistic figure at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, shaping its musical and educational identity. Following his 16-year tenure (1999–2015) as Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, he became Artistic Director of its Young Artists Program in 2016.

In this role, he focused on mentoring emerging musicians, building on initiatives he founded, including the Summer Music Institute. Zukerman emphasised high performance standards, international collaboration, and innovative distance-learning projects, ensuring the Centre’s continued global influence in training the next generation of classical performers.”

The Performance

When one speaks of contributions by the “legends” of the fiddle — the pantheon of violin mastery, etched firmly alongside the Heifetz, Stern, Perlman, Menuhin’s of the world — the name of Pinchas Zukerman stands secure.

This was a concert without bells, whistles, or fireworks. Here is an elder statesman at perfect ease with himself: his skills, his violin, his incredibly accomplished accompanist, his ego, and his audience. The music is king, and the musicians are here to serve it.

A quiet authority — a safe pair of hands at the wheel. Zukerman eased through an exquisite program with fluency and subtlety, placing emphasis on the profound emotional character within each piece.

The standouts were the beautifully rendered Beethoven Spring Violin Sonata and Elgar’s sublime Salut d’Amour. Amidst the understated poise, dignity, and joy of the evening, the transcendent Sonata in A major by Franck stood as a testament to the perfect union of genius composition and masterful interpretation.

For the brief two hours of exultant musical pleasure — and for a lifetime of service and achievement — Mr Zukerman, a heartfelt thank you.
