Selby & Friends | Mavericks – Sydney

This program presents the work of three fascinating composers whose impact was both profound and long-lasting. Whilst they experienced the world at very much the same point in time, their view of the piano trio genre was vastly different. Discouraged…

Review: Selby Serves up an Afternoon Feast

Selby & Friends | Exotic Strudel March 14, 2021, Turramurra Turramurra on a wet Sunday afternoon needed some brightness and it certainly received it from Selby & Friends whose latest offering was titled “Exotic Strudel” indicating the origin of the…

Selby & Friends | A Final Offering

Joining Selby for this performance are her brilliant international ‘friends’ Susie Park (Violin: Concertmaster Minnesota Symphony Orchestra), Stefanie Farrands (Principal Viola ACO) and Timo-Veikko Valve (Principal Cello ACO), in a program of Schubert, Schumann and Shostakovich. Fittingly named as each…

Selby & Friends’ “The Game Changers” an intriguing and fascinating program of revolutionary composers

Elena Kats-Chernin’s Blue Silence for Piano Trio must be one of the most stunning introductory pieces to a recital. Written in 2006 for her son suffering from schizophrenia, the piece is an exquisite journey into meditation and peace. I defy anyone…

Selby & Friends provided a vivid evening of Beethoven for the Sydney Mozart Society

The latest Sydney Mozart Society concert was cleverly timed to coincide with the opening of Vivid Chatswood but, fortunately, although the visual aspect was welcoming, we were insulated from the sound effects. On this occasion, Kathryn Selby continued her well-established…

Selby & Friends immensely enjoyed performing works by composers with troubled souls

I wonder what effect the title of Selby and Friends’ latest concert “Troubled Souls” had on readers? It certainly didn’t apply to the performers who clearly enjoyed the occasion immensely. They were; Julian Smiles well-known to all as, among others,…

Kathryn Selby has friends a-plenty – exemplary trio performance and brilliantly constructed programme

Kathryn Selby is not short of friends – the quality of her pianism and selection of her programmes is testament to that as is the number of her fans.

Selby & Friends’ Proud Folk was chamber music in the best tradition

Kats-Chernin’s The Spirit and the Maiden (2004), was commissioned in 2001 for the Macquarie Trio (of which Selby was a member) and has undergone several revisions since that time. It is based on an intriguing Russian fairy tale where, in…

Selby & Friends combines three brilliant soloists and an innovative program for Sydney Mozart Society

Hugely enjoyable with its varied innovative programme in an intimate atmosphere, an enthusiastic audience, and above all, the brilliance of its three soloists.

I had the privilege of attending the first of a series of concerts entitled “Collision Course” Tour 1 of Selby & Friends’ 2014 Subscription Series, chamber music provided by Kathy Selby & her colleagues playing different instruments in various combinations.…

Selby & Friends “The Kreutzer”

From the opening phrase of Brahms’ 3rd Violin Sonata, IIya Konovalov impressed with a violin tone that was exquisite. The lyrical opening was mellow but rich with nuance. As the sonata progressed Kathryn Selby emerged as equal partner in this musical collaboration and I was particularly impressed by her lightness of touch whilst maintaining the energy of the main theme in the third movement.

Selby and Friends, Confessions of a Romantic

If I’d known Turramurra Uniting Church was such a popular venue I would have arrived a little earlier to see pianist Kathryn Selby play with two talented Finnish musicians: Vesa-Matti Leppänen on violin and Timo-Veikko Valve on cello. There was…

The delight of discovering Selby and Friends

My involvement in classikON over the last year has provided me more than just discovering artists and enjoying music.  For me, there is joy in taking a pause from the busy-ness of the working week to spend time with friends…
