CSO wind virtuosos step into the spotlight An ever-changing musical kaleidoscope suffused with joy and affection. You’ll hear Mozart and Poulenc at their self-declared best and all four composers are writing music for instruments they adored, playing to their strengths. Mozart’s Quintet was an experiment: a concerto for piano and winds that won him ‘extraordinary applause’ at its first performance.
French and Australian works bring the season to a glittering conclusion. Jean Anouilh’s satirical comedy, known in English as Ring Round the Moon and worthy of Wodehouse or Waugh, inspired Poulenc’s highly amusing incidental music of dances and parodic character pieces to illustrate the comic intrigues at a lavish ball.
